In Arcadia (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.)

undefined undefined
A collaboration between myself and audio artist Angus Carlyle. It uses S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl by GSC gameworld, distributed by THQ as it's basis.
In Arcadia (S.T.A.L.K.E.R) explores the borderlands that open up between two representational terrains: the virtual topographies of computer simulation and the formal traditions of landscape (from its painterly expression to its recent evocation in acoustic ecology). The work utilises GSC’s videogame S.T.A.L.K.E.R. stripped of its original ominous, dark audio score and reworked with an idyllic, pastoral, ambient soundscape. A Repurposing of a pastoral backwater that conventional game players would just race past without a second glance. By careful positioning of a virtual tripod, discrete reconfiguring of the game engines output and a freshly composed audio score it explores both the constructedness and constructability of landscape and simulation.

Angus Carlyle (with edits by Corrado morgana)

The completed piece is approx 3 minutes long and can be configured for projection or monitor presentation. It is available in 16:9 and 4:3 versions. It does however require a good sound system as the audio is quite subtle..it has been boosted somewhat for the online example

A text entitled 'In Arcadia; Landscape filming in a toxic wasteland: Game engine affordances and post-game narratives' discusses the production of this piece.
pretentious eh!
